Going paperless reduces your impact on forests, decreases the amount of waste that is dumped into landfills, cuts energy use and helps lessen the impact of climate change. Based on the one act drama by Pulitzer Prize winner Eugene O’Neill, “Before Breakfast” is set in New York, 1916. Charlotte, a former marathon dancer, struggles to salvage her failing marriage, and to rekindle the passion she and her poet husband shared in the early days of their courtship.
Mental illness, unhealthy alcohol use, death ... in other words, just another day at the opera.
For me, Before Breakfast is a jewel of an opera about the many ways we deal with profound loss - clinging to hope for the return of something or someone we no longer have, raging against the injustice of fate, longing for the courage to dig ourselves out of emotional imprisonment, and dreaming of better days, be they in the past or future. Thomas Pasatieri and Frank Corsaro have adapted the original one act play by Eugene O’Neill and given Charlotte, our heroine, a much richer, more nuanced humanity. Naomi Forman’s unique concept for this piece both intrigued and moved me immediately, and I am so grateful to her for the opportunity to explore the piece with her. We hope you enjoy the Canadian premiere of Before Breakfast as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you.

In the spirit of respect, reciprocity and truth, we honour and acknowledge the traditional Treaty 7 territory of the Blackfoot Confederacy: Siksika, Kainai, Piikani, as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuu T’ina nations. We are situated on the land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, and the traditional Blackfoot name of this place is “Mohkinstsis” which we now call the City of Calgary. We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3 within the historical Northwest Métis homeland. Finally, we acknowledge all Nations – Indigenous and non – who live, work and play on this land, and who honour and celebrate this territory. We are all Treaty people.
Spanning generations, acknowledgement of the land is a traditional custom of Indigenous peoples when welcoming outsiders onto their land and into their homes. To build respectful relationships, acknowledging the land is an important part of reconciliation. It honours the authentic history of North America, its original people and tells the story of the creation of this country that has historically been missing.

Born October 16th, 1888, in New York City. Son of James O’Neill, the popular romantic actor. First seven years of my life spent mostly in hotels and railroad trains, my mother accompanying my father on his tours of the United States, although she never was an actress, disliked the theatre, and held aloof from its people. After expulsion from Princeton I led a restless, wandering life for several years… I went to sea, and also worked in Buenos Aires. Never held a job long. Was either fired quickly or left quickly. After this, was an actor in vaudeville for a short time, and reporter on a small town newspaper. At the end of 1912 my health broke down and I spent six months in a tuberculosis sanatorium.
Began to write plays in the Fall of 1913. In the Fall of 1914, I entered Harvard University to attend the course in dramatic technique…I left after one year and did not complete the course.
The Fall of 1916 marked the first production of a play of mine in New York – Bound East for Cardiff – which was on the opening bill of the Provincetown Players. In the next few years this theatre put on nearly all of my short plays [including Before Breakfast] but it was not until 1920 that a long play Beyond the Horizon was produced in New York. It was given on Broadway by a commercial management – but, at first, only as a special matinee attraction with four afternoon performances a week. However, some of the critics praised the play and it was soon given a theatre for a regular run, and later on in the year was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. I received this prize again in 1922 for Anna Christie and for the third time in 1928 for Strange Interlude.
